Aliyev Accused of Embezzling

BAKU, Azerbaijan -- The prime minister fired this month by President Heidar Aliyev has accused the Azerbaijani president of embezzling proceeds from a huge international oil contract.

"Azerbaijan's main natural wealth, oil, is shamelessly being sold by Aliyev's clan," Suret Huseinov said in a statement Saturday carried by the Turan news agency in Baku. "They have pocketed $2.5 billion in cash for signing a contract with a Western consortium."

Huseinov, a wealthy warlord who helped bring Aliyev to power in a coup last year, has opposed a $9 billion Caspian Sea oil deal signed in September with nine foreign companies.

In early October, Aliyev accused Huseinov of masterminding a coup attempt in the city of Gyandzha. The rebellion was put down in a day.

Huseinov was stripped of his post but he denies the accusations.

Turan said a Russian commando team took Huseinov and former Defense Minister Rahim Gaziev to southern Russia on Saturday.
