Wheelchair-Bound Cherbakov Watches Game in His Honor

Midfielders Nuno Capucho, in the 5th minute, and Hugo Porfirio in the 57th scored for Sporting while Russian striker Igor Shalimov notched the international side's only goal four minutes after the interval Tuesday.

The international XI, wearing shirts inscribed with the name "Cherbakov," included fellow players from the former Soviet Union such as Shalimov, who plays for Inter Milan in Italy, Sergei Kiryakov of Germany's Karslruhe and Aleksander Mostovoy, a member of France's Caen side.

Shalimov, Kiryakov and Mostovoy are all members of the Russian National team and are embroiled in the dispute with the Russian Football Federation about who should coach the team in the 1994 World Cup finals in the United States this June. The players are trying to have current coach Pavel Sadyrin replaced with former Soviet and CIS coach Anatoly Byshovets.

About 15,000, including Cherbakov, 22, in a wheelchair, watched the match played in Sporting's Alvalade stadium and transmitted live on local television.

Cherbakov's footballing career was ended on Dec. 15 when he severely injured his spine in a car accident in Lisbon.
