Uzbeks Name Som the Sole Legal Tender

TASHKENT -- Uzbekistan has banned all currencies except its som coupon from circulation starting Jan. 1, 1994, and will punish those caught dealing in other currencies.

A decree from the cabinet of ministers, published in the official Halkh Sozi newspaper Friday, also ordered savings banks to switch ruble accounts to som coupons from the new year.

"From Jan. 1, 1994, the som coupon will be the single and only legal money in circulation in Uzbekistan," it said.

"Workers in trade and other organizations found receiving 1993 Russian ruble notes should be punished in accordance with the law on currencies."

Uzbekistan has said that all Soviet-era rubles in circulation -- the one, two, three, five, 10, and 25 ruble notes -- will be withdrawn from Jan. 1.
