Uzbekistan Ups Taxes

Former Soviet Uzbekistan on Wednesday announced new property taxes but foreign businessmen in the Central Asian republic complained that taxes were already too high.

President Islam Karimov said in a decree that taxes would be levied on most types of real estate and vehicles, excluding cars and motorcycles. Such property was not previously taxed.

The immediately effective decree, published in the official Narodnoye Slovo newspaper, said the new property tax rates would be decided by the cabinet.

The tax would apply to houses, apartments, country houses, garages, premises and other buildings, motor boats, helicopters, airplanes and other vehicles except cars and motorcycles.

The Narodnoye Slovo newspaper also said a value-added sales tax of 25 percent will be maintained in 1994.
