U.S. Pledges China Aid

Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen on Friday pledged new U.S. assistance in China's drive to set up a market economy, but repeated Washington's strong demands for matching progress on human rights.

After opening the first Sino-U.S. joint economic committee meeting in six years, Bentsen said the two sides now had a new "high-level means of direct contact to enable us to make progress on our bilateral agenda."

He said China's aggressive market reforms this year were promising and vowed that Washington would help.

Bentsen said, however, that Washington needs to see more human-rights moves if China is to renew its most favored nation trade status this June.
