United Reach Semifinals of League Cup

LONDON -- All-conquering Manchester United continued its march toward all three major domestic honors when it beat first-division Portsmouth 1-0 to reach the semifinals of the English League Cup.

The only goal in the quarterfinal replay Wednesday came from Brian McClair, standing in for the suspended Mark Hughes, who headed home after 27 minutes. Portsmouth's hopes of saving the game virtually disappeared after 61 minutes when John Durnin was sent off for his second bookable offense.

In the one outstanding quarterfinal match, first-division rivals Nottingham Forest and Tranmere drew 1-1 with Chris Malkin scoring for Tranmere after 51 minutes and Scott Gemmill equalizing for Forest 16 minutes from time.

The match will be replayed on Saturday with the winner facing Aston Villa in the two-legged semifinals next month.

Manchester United, which won this trophy two years ago, now faces premier-league rival Sheffield Wednesday, winner in 1991 and runner-up to Arsenal last season, for a place in the final at Wembley on March 27.

It was United's 28th successive match without defeat and means it is still involved in both domestic cup competitions -- it plays Norwich in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday -- as well as being 13 points clear at the top of the table.

Manchester United will lay Sir Matt Busby to rest on Thursday, secure that it remains undiminished as the dominant force in British football.
