Talbot Marrow Surgery

BALTIMORE -- There were no complications from bone marrow surgery on Olympic speed skater Kristen Talbot, said Dr. Richard Jones, who performed the operation.

Talbot, 23, from Schuylerville, New York, had one liter of bone marrow removed from her pelvis Tuesday. It was donated to brother Jason, 18, at the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center. Jason Talbot has aplastic anemia, a rare and potentially fatal condition that attacks the bone marrow and slows or stops the production of red and white blood cells.

The surgery lasted about an hour, and the infusion to Jason Talbot soon followed. According to a hospital spokeswoman, it will be at least 14 days before blood cells can be produced and doctors can tell whether the procedure was a success.
