Opener Gary Kirsten hit an unbeaten 112 and paceman Richard Snell captured 5 for 40 to fire South Africa to a 28-run win over Australia in the first match of the World Series Cup finals Friday.

Kirsten's innings, off just 137 balls, spurred South Africa to 230 for 5 in its 50 overs and Australia was bowled out for 202 in 48.5 overs.

Australia's batsmen were shackled during the first half of their innings, scoring at barely three runs an over, and their last six wickets tumbled for 52.

South Africa takes a 1-0 lead into the second match, at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday. If Australia square the finals, the third game will be at the same venue next Tuesday.\
