Some Swan Song!

Swans brought to the brink of starvation by a European Union edict are stopping cars and "mugging" pedestrians for food, Berwick residents said on Monday.

For nearly 50 years, some 200 swans have wintered in this small town at the mouth of the River Tweed, feeding happily on grain and husks in effluent from the maltings at a local brewery.

But their daily fare stopped abruptly when the river authority enforced EU pollution regulations and halted the flow of untreated effluent.

"They leave the water and come knocking at our doors with their powerful beaks," said one woman, adding that the swans roamed the streets, obstructing traffic and virtually mugging pedestrians in their search for food.

"You can't ignore them," she added. "They're such big birds."
