Somali Clashes Erupt

Thirteen Somalis were killed in battles between clan gunmen north of Mogadishu in the worst fighting in Somalia in months, a U.N. military spokesman said Thursday.

Major Chris Budge said an unknown number were hurt in battles between the Abgal and Awadle sub-clans in Djohar, 100 kilometers north of Mogadishu.

Budge had no more information on the violence, the first since the Abgal and warlord Mohamed Farah Aideed's Habr Gedir agreed to a truce on Jan. 16.

U.N. officers had expected Somalia's rival militias to wait for U.N. forces to withdraw by the end of March before plunging back into civil war.
