Soccer Fraud Trial

Fraud charges against former Bordeaux soccer boss Claude Bez were trumped up at the instigation of his arch-rival Bernard Tapie, Bez's lawyer claimed at the end of a three-day trial.

Lawyer Francois Tosi said Tapie had acted out of revenge after Bez produced evidence that Marseille had been fixing French league matches. Bez and his son Eric have denied embezzling 10 million francs ($1.8 million) by artificially inflating a contract for the building of a new club training center.

The prosecution earlier demanded Bez be jailed for three years and fined two million francs and that his son receive a two-year prison sentence, with one year suspended.
