Sinn Fein Back on Air

The leader of the IRA's political wing, Sinn Fein, made his radio debut on Thursday moments after a 20-year Irish Republic broadcasting ban on the party expired.

"We have 20 years of disinformation and propaganda and lack of information to catch up on," Gerry Adams said in an interview broadcast by a small independent Dublin station, Classical Hits FM.

It was the first time a Sinn Fein official had been broadcast in Ireland since the government banned it two decades ago to punish violence by Irish Republican Army guerrillas.

Adams used the occasion to criticize a similar British ban and to repeat demands that London end its refusal to clarify the text of an Anglo-Irish peace plan for Northern Ireland.
