Sachs, Aslund Quit in Protest

Two top Western economic advisors to the Russian government resigned Friday saying that economic policies announced by the Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdyn contradicted their economic views.

Anders Aslund, of the Stockholm School of Economics, and Jeffrey Sachs, of Harvard University, who have been advising the government over the past two years submitted their resignations to President Boris Yeltsin on Friday.

Aslund said Friday he resigned for the same resons as former economics minister, Yegor Gaidar -- because the government had turned off the road of market reform.

"The Prime Minister made clear that the government will not fight inflation and will give easy credits to state enterprises and farms," he said.
