Russian Troop Farewell Set In Germany

BERLIN -- Chancellor Helmut Kohl and President Boris Yeltsin will attend a ceremonial farewell in August to the last Russian troops stationed in Germany, their commander said Tuesday.

General Matvei Burlakov told a news conference the ceremony would "close the final chapter of World War II," but gave no details of the ceremony.

Yeltsin favors holding it in the Reichstag, the Berlin parliament building where Soviet troops marked their victory by hoisting their red hammer-and-sickle banner, whereas Kohl is believed to want a more low-key event at one of the bases.

Burlakov said the withdrawal of troops was proceeding on schedule. Only some 30,000 are left.
