Popov Sets Record

Olympic champion Alexander Popov celebrated the New Year with a 100 meters freestyle short-course world record at the Hong Kong World Cup meet.

The Russian clocked 47.83 seconds in the 25-meter Kowloon Park pool to beat the mark of 47.94 set by Brazilian Gustavo Borges in Santos, Brazil, last July.

Popov set the record in the final, winning from Lithuanian Raimundas Majuolis and fellow Russian Vladimir Pyshnenko.
