Mafia Leader Killed, Rivals Suspected

A "mafia" mobster who terrorized Moscow businessmen has been assassinated, apparently by rival gangsters, Itar-Tass reported.

The man, known only as Frol, was brought to hospital in Kupavna east of Moscow during Friday night, riddled with bullets, and died some hours later.

The news agency said the man, 40, had been the head of the Russian Balashikha gang which had clashed frequently with a rival Chechen mafia.

Criminals have taken advantage of the breakdown of law and order following the collapse of Communist rule in 1991 to extort money from Russia's business sector. Several leading bankers and businessmen have been murdered for refusing to pay protection money or get involved in money-laundering.
