Land Deal Probe Urged

WASHINGTON -- President Bill Clinton will ask for a special prosecutor to "clear the air" over the controversy surrounding his role in a failed Arkansas development project, administration and congressional sources said Wednesday.

And in an interview with NBC News in Prague during a nine-day European trip, Clinton said it might be best to go along with a rising clamor for an independent counsel to probe the matter.

Senate Republican Leader Robert Dole held a news conference in Washington on Wednesday to call for Senate investigation of Clinton's business dealings in Arkansas, a move that would escalate pressure for full disclosure in the mushrooming controversy.

No one has accused the Clintons of any specific wrongdoing but suspicions persist that an Arkansas thrift failure may have been related to the land deal and to a Clinton campaign for governor.
