Killings Mark New Year

Killings marred the New Year weekend in South Africa despite pleas for tolerance as the country entered a critical year in its progress to black majority rule.

Police reported at least nine blacks killed in Johannesburg black satellite townships on the East Rand and in Natal province, scene of some of the bitterest confrontations between rival black political groups.

In Cape Town, a police general was quoted on Sunday as saying police had good leads on the people behind an attack on a popular multiracial nightspot in which four people were killed by black gunmen on Thursday night.

Two men purporting to speak for separate black underground groups later claimed responsibility for the attack on the Heidelberg pub.
