Israeli General Killed

The commander of Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank was killed in a helicopter crash early Wednesday, an army spokesman said.

Major General Nechemia Tamari, 47, was head of the Israeli army's central command, an area which includes the West Bank.

"The crash occurred at 0200 hours when Major General Tamari was returning from a security incident along the border," an official statement said. Three other officers also died.

The army ruled out a Palestinian attack as the cause of the crash.

"There was very poor visibility and bad weather conditions in the area of the landing pad at the time of the landing," the statement said.
