Israel: Assad Is The Key

Israeli President Ezer Weizman gave rare praise Tuesday to President Hafez al-Assad, saying he believed the Syrian leader was the key to a Middle East peace settlement.

"I see the key to furthering peace in the Middle East in finding a solution to Syria, which obviously depends on President Assad," Weizman told reporters in Ankara. "And I still see Assad as a leader through whom peace can be achieved."

Weizman, on the first state visit to Turkey by an Israeli president, said the outcome of last week's talks between Assad and U.S. President Bill Clinton in Geneva had been disappointing and urged Assad to meet Israeli leaders.

Israeli-Syrian peace talks resumed in Washington on Monday after a four-month suspension.
