Gunmen Kill 10 in Bus

Gunmen, waiting on both sides of a road, blasted a packed minibus east of Johannesburg on Friday killing five people and wounding 10.

Police said the attack, the latest in a spiral of violence which South Africa's leaders have vowed to end, took place outside a women's hostel in the township of Vosloorus. At least 50 spent cartridges were scattered in the roadside. Police said the gunmen, who escaped, had opened fire with AK-47 assault rifles. The motive was not clear.

President F.W. de Klerk, who on Thursday night accused Nelson Mandela's African National Congress of intolerance and intimidation in the townships, said the government was negotiating with interested parties to put together a plan to end violence and rebuild the shattered townships.
