Grand National Field

Despite last year's fiasco, Aintree's Grand National horse race proved as big an attraction as ever for owners when entries closed.

The total of 101 Wednesday, just one down on 1993, suggested there is no loss of confidence in the ability of the racecourse to stage one of the world's greatest races, which turned into a worldwide laughing stock last year when it was abandoned after several false starts.

The changes, most importantly to the starting mechanism and false start procedures, carried out since last April have won over many of the trainers, including most of those involved in the debacle.
