Doubt on IMF Visit

A top-level delegation from the International Monetary Fund may have to postpone a trip to Moscow because they will not have anyone to talk to, Western economists based in Moscow said Friday.

The delegation had been due next week to discuss Russia's reform efforts, including granting the second $1.5 billion installment of a loan to help Russia move to a market economy.

Economists said the IMF was likely to be worried by Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin predicting inflation to hit 18 percent, before falling to 8 or 9 percent by the end of the year. A policy document finalized last year with the IMF to secure a $4 billion standby loan had said inflation should fall to 5 percent by the end of the year.
