Ciampi Ready to Resign

Italian Prime Minister Carlo Azeglio Ciampi said Wednesday that he would resign if necessary after a parliamentary debate on a motion of no-confidence prompted by a political battle over the date of early elections.

The no-confidence debate, which Ciampi was opening, springs from a battle over the timing of the elections to replace a parliament battered by Italy's corruption scandal.

Traditional governing parties worst hit by the scandal want an election delayed until June, while opposition ex-communists and the pro-autonomy Northern League are pressing for elections in late April or early March.
