Australia Takes Cup

Australia clinched the World Series Cup on Tuesday as a jittery South Africa suffered an early collapse chasing a demanding target under lights at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

South Africa, needing 224 for victory and handicapped by batting under lights, had lost almost all hope in the first 10 overs when Australia captured three wickets in the space of five runs. They never recovered and fell short by 35 runs, making 188 for nine off their 50 overs.

Captain Allan Border, in probably his last international appearance at the SCG, symbolically bowled the final over and was rewarded with a standing ovation from the 40,000 crowd as he received the trophy.
