A Successor to Marchais

France's Communist Party opened a landmark congress Tuesday to pick a successor to veteran hardline leader Georges Marchais and overhaul authoritarian party rules harking back to Lenin.

The five-day meeting in the working-class Paris suburb of Saint-Ouen is a moment of truth for a party that was France's biggest after World War II but has seen its clout fade.

The high point comes on Saturday, when Marchais' successor will be announced.
