Julian Semyonov Dies

Julian Semyonov, 62, a prolific author of political detective novels, who has been called the Soviet Le Carre, died Wednesday, Russian television said. It did not give a cause of death.

Semyonov, Russia's top-selling novelist, gave up an academic career in 1958 to become a journalist and writer. His novel "Petrovka 38" became an overnight sensation in 1968.
