JV Unveils New ZiL Trucks at Show

A new U. S. joint venture unveiled a range of hybrid trucks that will put U. S. engines in the bodies of traditional Russian ZiL trucks at the first day of the Moscow Motor Show on Wednesday. Two U. S. companies, Caterpillar and Kenworth, started manufacturing Russian trucks with Caterpillar engines at the ZiL factory in Moscow several months ago, said James Martin, Sales and Marketing Director of the Novotruck firm, the joint venture which will market the trucks. He said the venture hoped to produce several thousand trucks within two to three years. Caterpillar and Kenworth are also doing a feasibility study at ZiL on a possible production line of Kenworth trucks with Caterpillar engines, Martin said. Until that project gets off the ground, Novotruck will import up to 500 Kenworth trucks from the United States over the next three years, Martin said. Although ZiL trucks with a Caterpillar engine may function better than the traditional models, sales are not guaranteed.
