Theater Begins Hunger Strike

The artistic staff of the central Moscow theater, Hermitage, began a hunger strike Tuesday protesting what they call an attempt by the property's management to take control of the premises.

"We will remain on strike until we receive official confirmation that our theater belongs to us", Mikhail Levitin, the theater's leader said in a telephone interview.

The interim director of Hermitage Garden complex, of which the theater is a part, denied Tuesday that he sought to take control of the theater company.

"They are only striking because scandal is their way of life", said Yury Medvedovsky. "We simply insist on respecting normal legal relations. We think the theater should exist and we are ready to support it".
