Airport Unions Reject Deal

Two major unions at Sheremetyevo 1 and 2 airports have rejected a proposal by the State Property Committee to settle a threatened strike which would halt all traffic at the airports on Monday, according to Konstantin Kalinin of the Sheremetyevo Cockpit Personnel Association.

The two unions, which represent air traffic controllers, pilots and ground workers, are threatening to halt all flights to and from Sheremetyevo for 24 hours unless the airport's workers are allowed to buy 51 percent of the company's shares at below-market cost.

During the talks on Monday the committee's spokesman, Pyotr Mostovoy, who is in charge of the privatization plan for Sheremetyevo, insisted that the cost of the airports be recalculated at an amount that reflects its present value. Workers want to use an appraisal made last summer, Kalinin said.

The two sides scheduled new talks for Friday.
