Transport Fares Increase

The cost of a journey on Moscow's buses, trolleys, trams and metro will sharply increase to 10 rubles on Friday, according to officials in the city hall.

Alexander Korolko, head of Moscow city government's price policy department, said the price rise was caused by the increasing costs of diesel fuel and gasoline, as well as wage raises for transportation workers.

Korolko said that all forms of public transport are still heavily subsidized by the state and that the real cost of one ride would be about 30 rubles for the metro and 50 to 60 rubles for buses, trolleys and trams.

Until Thursday a metro ride cost 6 rubles and other forms of public transport cost 5 rubles.

According to Korolko, the new prices were supposed to be introduced later in the year, but the decision was hurried by massive purchases of metro tokens.

"The government could not wait any longer, this speculation had to be stopped", he said.

No advance notice of the increase was given, Korolko said, to avoid a rush to buy tokens and tickets.
