Floods in Urals Leave 18 Dead

At least 18 people have died and thousands have been injured in floods near the city of Serov in the Ural Mountains, a Serov City Council official in Yekaterinburg said Wednesday.

Vladimir Lomontsev said torrential rain and melting snow in the mountains bad caused a drastic increase in the water level of the rivers of the Yekaterinburg region that resulted in the washing away of at least 12 bridges.

He said entire villages had been evacuated, adding that the situation in the regional capital of Yekaterinburg, located about 300 kilometers north of Serov, was normal.

Itar-Tass reported that about 6, 500 people had been injured. The report said a dam had broken on the Kavka River on Tuesday, causing the floods.
