More Rubles Out

MOSCOW (MT) - Russia has raised the number of rubles citizens can take abroad, but has upheld a requirement that the money not be spent outside Russia in order to stem an outflow of rubles.

According to Lyudmila Maslova, Chief Inspector of the State Customs Committee, Russians can now take up to 100, 000 rubles with them on trips abroad, up from 2, 000 rubles, in order to cover travel expenses inside Russia when they return.

Travelers cannot use the money abroad, as the export of rubles is illegal and the ruble is still not convertible. This restriction includes travel to Ukraine and the Baltic states, which have abandoned the ruble.
