Helicopter Shoots Flares at Japanese Fishing Boats

A Russian helicopter fired six warning flares at Japanese fishing boats it believed had violated Russia's territorial waters, Itar-Tass reported over the weekend.

The incident occurred 28 kilometers south of Iturup Island in a disputed area of the southern Kuril Islands last week, the news agency said Saturday, quoting a local official of the Department for Safety at Sea.

The official said he did not know if the flares had caused damage, but told Itar-Tass that there had been no casualties.

A press officer at the Japanese Embassy in Moscow contacted by telephone on Monday said he had not heard of the incident and could not comment.
