Tatars Getting Poorer

MOSCOW (MT) -- Nearly half of the citizens of Tatarstan earn only enough money to buy food, Interfax reported Tuesday.

It quoted a survey by the Tatar parliament, which said that 44. 7 percent of the republic's population cannot afford anything but their daily meals. Only 2. 2 percent can afford upscale goods, the survey said.

The prices of eggs, milk, butter and vegetable oil are going up by about 50 percent a month, despite government food subsidies of 1, 200 rubles per capita per month. This month's bread subsidy alone will cost the republic 680 million rubles, Interfax said.
