Moscow Protests Attacks in Georgia

MOSCOW -- Russia has protested to Georgia over the latest in a series of attacks on its military bases in the Transcaucasian state, according to Interfax.

The Russian Army command in Georgia demanded "resolute measures" to investigate an attack on a depot in the capital Tbilisi in which 40 armed men beat up three Russian guards and made off with television sets, radios, cameras and vehicles.

It said that unless the incident was properly investigated, it would conclude the Georgian leadership had authorized acts of violence against Russian forces stationed in Georgia.

Georgia ordered an immediate investigation into Friday's attack, saying all necessary steps should be taken to punish the culprits, Itar-Tass said.

It was the latest in a spate of similar incidents which have severely damaged ties between the two states.

Their tense relations have been further strained following Georgia's ending of a Russian airlift of emergency aid to Tkvarcheli, in rebel Abkhazia. Russian helicopters managed to bring relief supplies to the town Saturday, but the "Vesti" television news program reported Sunday night that the relief effort had once again been halted by fighting.
