Fishermen Call Strike

MOSCOW (MT) -- Hundreds of fishermen in the Far East have announced that they plan to go on strike because they are no longer allowed to import right-hand drive cars, Nezavismaya Gazeta reported.

Fishermen from the Sakhalin, Kamchatka, Magadan and Primorsky regions have sent telegrams to the Dalriba fishing plant in the past few days announcing that they will go on strike to protest last week's ban by Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin on cars with a right-hand drive.

Importing secondhand cars from Japan, where cars drive on the left side of the road, has been a welcome addition to many fishermen's salary.
