Moscow Unfazed on Tests

The Russian Foreign Ministry reacted in low-key fashion Wednesday to the disclosure, that the United States carried out 204 nuclear tests during the Cold War that it had never before publicly acknowledged.

A spokesman for the ministry's North American department said in a telephone interview that the revelation Tuesday came as no surprise to Moscow, although he said that any published data in this field was "interesting".

"This does not in any way affect our current bilateral relations, because we are now talking about stopping nuclear tests in the future - not in the past", the spokesman said.

U. S. Energy Secretary Hazel O'Leary disclosed Tuesday that the government had kept 204 underground nuclear tests, about one-quarter of the total number, secret, in hopes that the Soviet Union would not find out about them.
