President To Go to Brussels

Just before Russia goes to the polls, President Boris Yeltsin will travel to Brussels to sign a landmark agreement with the European Community that will open up the EC market to Russian goods, top officials announced in Moscow Thursday.

Jean-Luc Dehaene, prime minister of Belgium and rotating chairman of the European Community, told a press conference that Yeltsin will visit Brussels on Dec. 9 to sign a framework accord for the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, which will remove many EC import restrictions on Russian goods and offer Russia export assistance later next year.

"The purpose of the agreement is to help Russia - to integrate it in the world market through exports and cooperation", EC President Jacques Delors said at the press conference.

Dehaene and Delors visited Yeltsin and Prime Minster Viktor Chernomyrdin on Thursday to discuss the treaty, foreign investment and an upcoming energy charter, Dehaene said.
