Police Casualties Get Benefits

Mayor Yury Luzhkov has approved a package of benefits, including apartments and free telephone installation, for police wounded and killed during the rebel uprising on Oct. 3-4.

Five family members of officers killed in the fighting and another 12 wounded officers and their families will receive apartments, according to the decree released this week. The apartments will be between two and four rooms, depending on the size of the officer's family.

The Luzhkov decree also doles out garden plots in the Moscow region, garages, and telephone installation at state expense, and promises a memorial to the police who died in the line of duty.
