'Gorbymania' Becomes English

It's official - the fervent Western admiration for the architect of perestroika and glasnost, Mikhail Gorbachev, has become a word in the English language.

"Gorbymania" appears as an entry in Volume 2 of the Oxford English Dictionary Editions Series, which is published Thursday.

"Gorbymania" is defined as, "excessive enthusiasm for Mikhail Gorbachev and for his policies, dating from 1986".

The Los Angeles Times first used the expression "Gorbymania", as an emotion that "will sweep Eastern Europe", in December 1987.

A spokesperson for the Oxford English Dictionary, contacted Wednesday, laughed. "It's wonderful, isn't it? You get it into print and it's out of date already".
