Riot Police, Protestors Clash More Violently

Riot police clashed with pro-parliament demonstrators for the third day running Thursday, but changed their tactics to use significantly more force in dispersing them.

Day-long skirmishes between demonstrators and special OMON riot police at the Barrikadnaya metro station, close to the White House, culminated Thursday evening as riot police beat about 1, 000 protesters back into the subway.

About 600 demonstrators then took the train to Pushkin Square, but as soon as they emerged from the station about 400 riot police attacked with shields and truncheons, leaving one woman with a broken leg and several people dazed with bloody faces.

As the protestors fled they shouted "fascists" at the OMON and Dzerzhinski regiment Interior Ministry troops, apparently enraging the riot police who followed them into the metro station to beat them inside.

The clashes lasted about 30 minutes from just before 6 P. M. , until the two sides settled down to a standoff with scattered groups of protesters shouting at the police from around the square.

Earlier in the day the OMON apparently decided to break up any crowds before they could form, attacking protesters as soon as they numbered five or 10. Previously, the police have waited until significant crowds gathered before moving to disperse them.

This was the third day running in which 1, 000-2, 000 demonstrators have gathered around the Barrikadnaya station in an attempt to push through the police cordon and join a dwindling White House defense on the other side.
