Fire Destroys Libyan Office

A fire destroyed much of the Libyan military attache's office, the Moscow fire department said Monday.

Andrei Morozin, spokesman for the fire department, said neighbors reported at 10: 58 P. M. on Friday that flames were coming from the building at 20 Merzlyakovsky Pereulok, in the Krasnopresnensky region of the city.

A Libyan diplomat, whose last name was given as Al-Situri by the Moscow police, and a Russian guard escaped from the building unscathed.

Morozin said firemen arrived within six minutes of the alarm and the fire was extinguished by 11: 35 P. M.

The cause of the fire had not been determined, he said, but it had probably started in either the basement or on the first floor of the building.

The Libyan Embassy declined comment.
