Driver Dies as Car Sinks in Hot Water

One person died and two were injured when a car fell into a pit created by a flow of hot water in northern Moscow, police said Monday.

Mikhail Libkind, 32, the deputy director of the commercial firm Khutor, died from injuries he received when his Jeep sank into an eight-meters-square hole in the middle of Ulitsa Khachaturyana near Altufevskoye Shosse on Saturday morning, according to traffic police spokesman Andrei Shchavelev.

The hole developed in the road after an underground hot water pipe burst and the water flow washed out masses of gravel from under the asphalt, Shchavelev said.

Libkind's companion suffered burns from the hot water and is now hospitalized. The driver of the Jeep received minor injuries and has been treated, police said.
