Network Chief Named

President Boris Yeltsin on Monday named a reform legislator and media expert to replace Yegor Yakovlev as head of the country's largest radio and television network.

Vyacheslav Bragin, 53, the chairman of parliament's mass media committee, will take over immediately as head of the Ostankino Radio and Television Network.

Well known as one of parliament's most liberal legislators. Bragin has fought off attacks in recent months from hardline parliamentarians who have sought to disband the mass media committee and bring the press under their control.

He led a group of deputies opposing a parliament vote last autumn to take control of the Izvestia publishing house.

Yeltsin sacked Yakovlev as head of Ostankino in November, succumbing to pressure from Russian republican leaders who complained that news coverage of the country's ethnic conflicts was often biased.
