Aeroflot Fares Go Sky High

Fares for all Aeroflot flights within the Commonwealth rose fourfold or more over the New Year, according to airline officials, although there is as yet no evidence that passenger traffic has been affected.

An Izvestia article said that for the year as a whole passenger traffic had fallen by a third.

The Transport Ministry had warned that prices might rise tenfold this year -- especially on long-distance flights -- and as of Jan. 1 those warnings were realized.

It now costs 26, 892 rubles to travel from Moscow to Khabarovsk -- up from 4, 033 last year, according to Galina Potashova, from the Transport Ministry's tariffs department.

Moscow to Leningrad has risen from 1, 045 rubles to 4, 850, and to Yakutsk it now costs 23, 500 instead of 4, 520, Potashova said. Further increases are a possibility if fuel costs rise.
