Wage scale unveiled

MOSCOW (MT) -- Up to 15 million Russians will benefit from a government decree introducing a single wage scale for state budget-sector employees, Itar-Tass reported.

Speaking in the Kremlin Thursday, President Boris Yeltsin said that it was "inadmissible to limit the worker's wage to 4, 000 rubles today, whereas the average wage in the country is 6, 000 rubles".

Until now, a restrictive wage scale limited pay raises for budget-sector employees below those of workers in the industrial sectors of the economy. The lowest grade earned only 1, 350 rubles a month.

Submitting the government's report, Gennady Melikyan, the minister of labor, said that the single wage scale "envisages a rise in the wage rates from grade to grade".

He said that because of the numbers of people affected, the program's rapid introduction would require a fund of 38 to 40 billion rubles.
