Giant Unilever expanding

Unilever, one of the world's 20 largest companies, has announced the launch of a new subsidiary, Unirus, which promises to bring a broad range of household brands to Russia.

Satish Sohoni, the company's general sales manager in Moscow, said Thursday that the Anglo-Dutch company will set up a Russian-staffed network of distributors, wholesalers and retailers for four of its popular products: Omo detergent. Lux soap, Signal toothpaste and Impulse perfume.

Sohoni said that the company, with manufacturing operations in 75 countries and sales in over 150, will sell its products for rubles.

"We have made a long-term commitment to this country, so naturally we are selling for rubles", he said, though he declined to reveal the volume of sales. Sohoni said that his company did not have immediate plans to build factories in Russia.
