Show trial, U. S. style: Jury comes to Russia

Tanya Nachaparenko shifts uneasily in her seat as the silver-haired man standing in front of hep repeats his question. ""Was my client, Mr. Gustarov, driving in the crosswalk when he hit Yury Ivanovich? "" Nachaparenko is the only person who saw Igor Gustarov's car hit and fatally injure a 40-year-old auto worker. Now, the victim's American wife is suing Gustarov for $160, 000. and Nachaparenko's testimony is being discredited during cross-examination. ""Miss Nachaparenko, three years ago, you said you witnessed the accident while standing on the sidewalk. Now you say you were crossing the street"", the lawyer says, grinning confidently at the jury. ""I have to congratulate you, Miss Nachaparenko. Your memory has improved"". Moscow Law? The Russian People's Court? Justice of the steppes? Actually, it is a demonstration trial put on by a delegation of lawyers from the American Board of Trial Advocates, an organization which promotes the right to a trial by jury, as guaranteed in the U. S. constitution.
