Russian rich get new toys from Porsche

Move over Volvos and Mercedes. The Kairin Company, a Japanese firm, will open the city's first Porsche dealership Friday hoping to sate the Moscow elite's growing appetite for luxury items.

"It is a bit peculiar that Porsches will be for sale here", said Alexei Batin, sales manager for the dealership, which is housed inside the Research Institute for Iron and Steel Works on Baumanskaya Ulitsa. "But there are some very rich people in Russia".

The racy sports car already has a proven track record in the city. The Swedish Embassy held a special automobile exposition last month in which Russians purchased the only two Porsches on sale.

"We are doing business here for Russians", said Batin. "That's who we hope to have as our customers".

The dealership will start small and display only two models: a black Porsche 944 and a plum Porsche 911. They sell for $57, 400 and $65, 400, respectively. Other models can be ordered.

Moscow's streets may not be conducive to driving a Porsche. But Batin thinks potential clients have other reasons for splurging on a car. "People here don't buy a Porsche for driving", he said. "They buy it for show".
